Design Objectives

The digital remains and assets bring up the complexity of who should have rights to access those deceased accounts, how to manage those digital content effectively when the owner is no longer present, how to protect the deceased people’s online privacy and how to maintain digital remains with expanding resources and economical costs. The objectives of my design is to speculate the social media in the future and propose new alternative StoryLife that utilize VR technology to help to investigate the relationship between human physical presents and virtual realm, translate the physically-based human activities into the virtual setting, help to build a virtual intimate connection between people in their immortal digital present, and give back the ownership of digital rights to users. Individually, people could record their stories and life and manage their digital assets or future remains at their will. On societal level, it brings digital rights and ownership back to people and minimize the negative consumer externalities. 

Initial Stage: 7 in 7 Prototypes

Over the course of 7 days, I create 7 small-scale prototypes that address and build upon my research findings. AR was initially used and adopted as part my user testing. 

Iterations

 

Primary criteria 

  • The design should be easy for people to categorize and organize their digital assets and remains.

  • The platform will be an immersive experience for people to interact with the digital assets and remains.

  • People are allowed to own and control their digital assets and remains.

  • The design allows people to customize their own rules for their digital assets and remains.

Constraints 

  • The design should be decentralized in nature.

  • The utilization of data needs consent from the owner and agreement needs to be signed between owner and any other individual, company or third party organization. 

  • Newsfeed or any forms of push notification features can be limited according to users’ preference.

Secondary criteria

  • The design encourages people to connect intimately and in deeper level.

  • The design build up a community where both live and past users are presented at their will.

Users & Audience 

The design is especially focusing on millennials who currently using multiple social media, chatting apps, online music and movies collection actively but seeking for more private space, emotional intimacy and controls over their data in digital world.
